Ancient Maps Of Practice To Train Intuition & Deepen Meditation
Presented By Gitte Bechsgaard RP PhD CIYT-III
“The repetition of the mantra purifies the mind and the emotions, and the mind becomes absorbed in the object of the mantra.”
The Late B.K.S. Iyengar
The ancient practice of reciting mantras and chanting sanskrit invocations subtly moves you to your greatest potential.
Over the centuries, the world’s sages (Rsis) and yogis from a variety of spiritual traditions have chanted as a form of daily discipline.
Once embraced by the energies of sacred sound, the sages and yogis would enter unimaginable states of mental clarity, high vibration energy and inner concentration.
Precise repetition of these sacred Sanskrit syllables is said to unlock the power held within the mantra.
It fuels the spiritual experience.
You’re brought into meditation in order to cultivate a deeper connection to the inner abiding Self (purusa), as well as with the universe as a whole.
“If you repeat the mantra while practicing Yoga, you will be able to penetrate the deeper levels of the asanas. Gradually, you will become aware of the pranic flow in the body, the deeper aspects of the asana, and finally you will experience its mystical meaning.”
– Swami Sivananda Radha
Mantra recitation in unison with yoga practice enabled the great yogis to descend deeper into their asanas. They’d journey to a place where it became possible to experience prana, “the primordial energy of the universe”.
This spiritual invigoration that chanting of mantras would infuse awakened the energetic trinity within their subtle body.
Unlocking the path to wisdom and higher states of consciousness.
– Anamaya Kosha : The Body Of The Physicality
– Pranamaya Kosha : The Body Of The Breathe
– Manomaya Kosha : The Body of The Emotions
– Vijnanamaya Kosha : The Body of The Intellect
– Anandamaya Kosha : The Body of One’s Bliss
The oldest maps of the subtle anatomy are found within the ancient texts of the Upanishads, which speak of five bodies or sheaths called “koshas”.
The first is the physical body, cultivated mainly through asana practice.
The second is the breath body, unlocked with pranayama.
The third is the manomaya kosha, the emotional body, which is generally the most difficult body to bypass.
Often unknowingly neglected or avoided in yoga practice.
The vibrations brought about by the repetition of mantras are said to purify the mind and nervous system, giving rise to a steady flow of concentration. According to the great yogic masters, the emotional body is unlocked through the subtle vibrations of these sacred sanskrit syllables.
Spiritual masters worldwide chant hymns, mantras, and devotional prayers for reasons far beyond religiosity.
The Vedas understood that subtle vibrations of sound could be carefully utilized to benefit your physical anatomy and subtle body.
Each mantra holds an encoded series of vibrations carefully honed to cultivate the desired result. The Yogic masters prescribed a wide variety of mantras to relieve a wide array of sufferings.
These esoteric prescriptions are called Upayas.
The exalted energies that select mantras infuse into your daily practice guide you to penetrate the five koshas in order to open the gateway to wisdom and heightened states of consciousness.
Once the yogi unites the trinity of worldly bodies, they can unlock the path to wisdom and eventually The Final Kosha: The Body of Bliss.
Initiated Guidance Is Required To Truly Access A Mantra’s Energy
For thousands of years, spiritual masters the world over have emphasized the utmost importance of the guru’s guidance on any spiritual journey.
Individuals initiated by the Guru are guided to share these practices in very specific ways.
Only they can instruct on, and initiate others into, mantra practice.
Teacher and student have become interlinked through countless generations of disciples. In Sanskrit this is called Param Para literally one after the other in succession.
Unfortunately, neither I nor anyone else can initiate you into mantras without years of close 1-on-1 study, and dedicated daily practice.
Yet you can still begin to learn the sacred sanskrit syllables and the meter of these mantras in your own time.
With the right guidance.
Normally, when you look up traditional Indian chanting it’s often very fast and difficult to access for learning purposes.
When you first start learning a mantra, your teacher needs to break down almost every word.
This is the traditional way it’s taught in person between guru and disciple, teachers and students.
You steadily hone and improve your Sanskrit.
The invocations penetrate the depths of your mind and soul.
Progressive learning is facilitated in a step by step manner, and the mantras become more accessible.
If you are interested in enriching your practice and your journey to higher consciousness through these classical methods, guided by an initiated teacher, then our new online course here at Vidya Institute will be a transformative resource on your journey.
