“Whether one agrees with the technicalities of karmic causality or not, everyone desires progressively to raise the threshold of their intelligence and reap the benefits.”
– B.K.S. Iyengar
Karma is a mysterious force that connects past, present, and future in a deep web of meaning.
Ultimately, it represents a frame of understanding.
A means of interpreting your present life (Jati) in interaction with specific spiritual lessons pertaining to previous lives.
Implicit is the idea of a subtle-yet-powerful continuum.
An esoteric interplay between your past lives and your current life, along with its many dimensions, directions, and possibilities.
Karma is also one of the main pillars of Vedic Astrology, traditionally called Jyotish, and is likewise fundamental to almost all of the classical Yogic Texts.
Contrary to popular belief, Karma is NOT traditionally understood nor conceptualized as inevitable destiny.
It’s a complex interaction of life’s energies.
An interplay mediated between:
Fixed Karmas
Human Agency
This conflict and tension is viewed differently in the various yogic texts.
However, it’s only in the Vedic Discipline of Jyotish (Vedic Astrology) where a truly tailored analysis of karma takes place.
Every planet (graha), star constellation (nakshatra), and house of a vedic horoscope (Bhava) is most deeply understood once viewed through the lens of Karma theory.
Though conceptualized differently, the various texts all agree a form of metaphysical transfer occurs from life to life, witnessed in one’s horoscope.
Representations of energies faced in this life.
Energies you must become conscious of in order to take command of
your dharma.
It’s only through this awareness that you can best seek out ways to transform yourself.
To purify the karmas and kleshas.
Contemporary scholars and Yogic Masters such as B.K.S. Iyengar, Ram Dass, and Swami Chidvilasananda each enriched this millenia-old dialogue on karma.
Each stressed the positive agency and self-reflective gift that every one of us possesses as human beings.
The message from these author-sadhakas, as well as from my dear late Jyotish Guru Sri Krishan Mantriji, rings clear in unison:
Befriend your body, mind, soul, and karma with awareness & discrimination.
Use Sadhana and Karmic Upayas.
To set yourself free.
To grow into Wisdom.
During this Summer’s Vedic Astrology & Yoga Philosophy Intensive you’ll discover the lesser known realms of The Indian Doctrine of Karma.
The examination of Karma theory through the lens of Classical Indian philosophy and Vedic Astrology provides participants with an enriched understanding and integrative foundation for further study and practice of Karma, Jyotish, & Yoga alike.
In class, you’ll experience initiated guidance in the chanting of Classical Sanskrit mantras, as an integrated element of these astrologic, yogic, and esoteric practices.
The subtle vibrations of the sacred Sanskrit syllables are said to be an encoded avenue to higher frames of consciousness.
Mantra Upayas have long been prescribed, based on one’s horoscope, as a highly-directed tool for healing the subtle anatomy.
Yogic masters chanting The Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali was not simply a practice of dedication, but a technique of memorizing and encoding the vibrations, philosophies, and practices within the deepest layers of mind & spirit.
From the perspective of yoga practice, BKS Iyengar’s method is directly modeled on the philosophies and practices of the Sage Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras – and so this is the tradition our classes will follow in the integration of these various maps & methods into your personal yoga practice.
Every Thursday’s Iyengar Yoga Asana-Pranayama session will take the earlier Astrology Lecture & Scripture lesson and apply what you’ve learned to teachings laid out by BKS Iyengar.
Teachings designed to help you truly free your body, mind, and soul through spiritual & yogic practice.
This summer’s curriculum is designed as an accessible primer on the integrative theory & practice of Vedic astrology, Yoga Philosophy, and the Indian Doctrine of Karma.
In addition to the study of classical texts and Sanskrit commentaries, we will treasure many of Sri Krishan Mantriji’s life-transforming teachings on Karma theory, bringing a whole new perspective to the often difficult and mysterious topic of Karma.
The curriculum will stand on its own as a unique foundational intensive.
An opportunity for interested yoga practitioners, unsure about deeper programs, to get a feel for these teachings before committing themselves to a full year of studies.
This course is not a mandatory prerequisite for the soon-to-be-announced year programs, but the teachings are quite unique and will very much complement our deeper teachings later this year.
As always, participants are asked to attend live via a Zoom link, sent to their email shortly before each class or via the link found inside their registration receipt.
We kindly ask that everyone has their webcams on and does their best to be in a suitable space.
This is not mandatory, yet it will enrich your learning and participation experience.
Of course, you’ll also receive a video recording of the class in your email inbox shortly after each session.
You’ll have access to the video for 30 days.
Unlike many courses here at Vidya Institute, there are no prerequisite requirements for this program.
If you’re interested in Vedic Astrology or Yoga Philosophy, this summer immersion program will be an amazing opportunity to explore these traditions in the integrative manner they were classically taught.
Even those already familiar or experienced with jyotish will find the teachings and practices unique and relevant to both professionals and practitioners, with a wide range of experience and from a broad array of backgrounds.
A focus on chanting mantra upayas, and integrative yogic-jyotish practices, makes this very different from most foundational Vedic Astrology curricula you may be familiar with.
Please also note that most class sessions will end with 10-15 minutes of time for student questions and dynamic discussion with the teacher. This Q&A period will also be found within the class recording.
Workshop Location: Live Online. Recordings sent to everyone after each session.
The link to join the class, hosted via the Zoom app, will arrive in your email inbox 24 hours before each day’s session. The link to join the class is also found written inside of your enrollment receipt, sent to your email inbox immediately after registration.
Regardless of if you miss class, a video recording will be made available to all participants in order to study for 30 days after each session. If you need special arrangements made, please contact Vidya Institute Support.
Video recordings of each class are typically sent out within a couple hours of a session’s completion.
